ladysophiekitty: (Cordelia book)
[personal profile] ladysophiekitty

Last year I challenged myself to read 50 books and ended up reading about 150. This year, it's gonna be 200. Some of these books I'll comment on here and rate. If it has ** next to it, it's a reread. Yes, I'm counting them.

1. The Road to Avalon by Joan Wolf. **
Rating: 5/5
Comments: What makes this book stand out to me is how every single character is made out to be sympathetic, good, but with flaws that eventually lead to their downfalls. There is no one evil character. Gwenhwfer, Mordred, Morgan, they're all likable. Arthur/Morgan have this beautiful relationship too, one of the best portrayed. Another thing that made the book stand out to me was the fact that there wasn't much religious debate. In fact, only one comment is made when a Pagan knight complains about a monk he doesn't like. Arthur says "If we judged all religions by their human representatives, they would all be found lacking."

2. The Two Princesses of Bamarre by Gail Carson Levine**
It's been years since I've read it, but this was one of my favorite books when I was about seven or eight. I like another book by this author, Ella Enchanted, better, but it's stll a fun and cute read.

3. The Countess Under the Stairs by Eva Ibbotson
Rating: 3/5
Comments: This book was given to me for my birthday. It was a brainless read, rather fairytale like. Very quick and easy read, and it's fun.

66. A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain

67. Virals by Kathy Reichs

68. The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan
Rating: 5/5
Comments: As always, Riordan's books are fun and entertaining. I used to read a lot of Greek mythology, so it's fun being reminded of it or "I knew that!".  Look forward to the next book in the series! And it was nice seeing some familiar faces from Percy Jackson.

69. Fallen Grace by Mary Hooper
Rating: 3/5
Comments: I'd read a good review about this book and seeing as how I love Victorian era novels, I thought I'd check it out. It was...ok. The descriptions of poverty in Victorian London was good and it was certainly compelling, but also very cheesy and overdramatic and I felt like it was more of those penny novels that people sold at the time, with a girl who's poor but is such a true and good character that a fortune/man comes her way and she gets a happy ending.

70. The Night Watch by Sarah Waters
Rating: 4/5
Comments: This was an interesting book, especially since it almost took a backwards story telling. Each section was a few years earlier.

71. Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson ** (reread)
Rating: 5/5
Comments: This was a very difficult book to read because of the subject matter and how deep into the mindset of an eatng disorder, self cutting, depression, and the guilt of having someone die Anderson goes, but it was a good book, and  powerful.

72. Sunshine by Robin McKinley
Rating: 4/5
Comments: A very different take on the vampire novel from most stories I've read! I also spent most of the book quite hungry, since the main female character works in a bakery of her stepfather's restaurant.

73. Ruby in the Smoke by Phillip Pullman ** (reread)
Rating: 5/5
Comments: Not sure if this counts as a reread, actually, since it's been so long that I didn't remember a thing (other than her steady shooting hand). I'd read this in elementary school and it was fun reading it again! Will have to check out the rest of the series.

74. Landing by Emma Donnaghue
Rating: 3/5
Comments: This was the first book by this author that I've read, and I've heard she writes more Victorian era novels. (I think I just checked one out from the library, actually). It was entertaining, but there was something about this novel that made it so that it wasn't OMG LOVE. I'm not really sure what.

75. The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Rating: 4/5

76.The Shadow in the North by Phillip Pullman
Rating: 3/5

77. The Tiger in the Well by Phillip Pullman (read 6/8)
Rating: 5/5
Comments: This book has to be my favorite of the series. I was entertained and amused the entire time. The mystery is pretty obvious, but the book was still fun so I didn't care.

Rating: 4/5
Comments: A cute book, light and fun!

131. Beauty by Robin McKinley
Rating: 3.5/5

132. Bright Young Things by Anna Godbersen
Rating: 3/5
Comments: I have to admit I was curious about this book. But unfortunately, the character in it I was most interested in (Letty) wasn't in it as much as the other 2 characters who I didn't really care about.

133. Room by Emma Donoghue
Rating: Undecided
Comments: I wasn't sure to include this one since I didn't technically "finish it" but figured I was close enough to the end for it to count. This book didn't catch my interest, and the font on the kindle was SO SMALL it hurt my eyes to read. Now, maybe there's a way to increase the size of the text on the kindle, but I haven't figured it out yet.

134. Aurelia by Anne OsterlandR
ating: 3.5/5

135. Rites of Spring (Break) by Diane Peterfreund

Rating: 3/5
Comments: Review coming soon

145. Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
Rating: 5/5
Comments: Review coming soon

146. The Luxe by Anna Godbersen
Rating: 1/5
Comments: Review can be found here

147. First Among Sequels by Jasper Fforde
Rating: 4/5
Comments: This one wasn't as good as the last one, and it felt more like a filler book, but it was still loads of fun and hilarious.

149. Ruby Red by Kerstin Gier
Rating: 4/5
Comments: I enjoyed this book! It was fun and cute. Look forward to the next two coming out!

150. Dance with Dragons by George R.R. Martin
Rating: 2/5
Comments: The problem with this book was that it didn't actually have too many of my favorite characters in it. I actually don't like this series that much, but a few characters make it for me. Because of that, it just seemed to drag.

151. Arabella by Georgette Heyer
Rating: 4/5

152. The Crystal Cave by Mary Stewart
Rating: 4/5
Comments: An interesting thing about this book is that it didn't actually introduce many characters you're familiar with from legend. But it was a good setup, and we'll meet them in future books!

153. Beautiful Days by Anna Godbersen
Rating: 3/5

154. The Beekeeper's Apprentice by Laurie R. King **
Rating: 4/5
Comments: I read this last year and enjoyed it, but stopped during the third book because there were some developments I felt uncomfortable with. I'm still uncomfortable with it, but the first book is still a lot of fun.

155. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
Comments: Somehow I missed reading this book when I was growing up. Not sure how since my sister loved it and it was recommended to me several times. But no matter, reading it now!

156. One of our Thursdays is Missing by Jasper Fforde
Rating: 3.5/5
Comments: my least favorite of the series, unfortunately. It was still good, but not quite the same and there didn't seem to be much point/a plot to it other than to make geeky book references. WHICH I STILL ENJOY so it wasn't a complete loss.

157. The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis **
Comments: Not rating this one because it's one of those childhood books that I completely fell in love with! Man, what good memories I have. Reading it again and noticing things I didn't before (the religious stuff, mostly) was a bit odd. How much went over my head when I was 7!

158. Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins
Rating: 4/5
Comments: I love this author. Seriously, she writes books that are EXACTLY what I need. I think I liked Anna's book better, though, probably because it takes place in PARIS! But Perkins is very good at writing a male character you'll fall in love with.

159. Faerie Wars by Herbie Brennan
Rating: 3/5
Comments: it was an entertaining book (and imaginative), but something felt like it was missing. Not really sure what.

160. The Purple Emperor by Herbie Brennan
Rating: 3/5
Comments: Same as the previous book.

161. The Lost Crown: A Novel of Romanov Russia by Sarah Miller
Rating: 4.5/5
Comments: This was a much better book than the book I read about Anastasia earlier this year! It was well written and you could tell a LOT of research and thought had been put into it. The girls were the right combination of naive and still being somewhat aware of the situation. My only complaint was that switching point of views from the 4 girls every chapter could be a bit confusing, but each girl had a distinctive enough character that it wasn't TOO hard. And even though I knew what would happen, the ending was well written enough that I was still surprised and horrified.

162. The Reluctant Heiress by Eva Ibbotson
Rating: 4/5
Comments: Ahh, this book was just what I needed. Light and fun, almost Disney like in some ways. Actually, her heroines usually remind me of Disney princesses in some way or another. A very cute book!

163. She Went All the Way by Meg Cabot
Rating: 3/5
Comments: Meg Cabot is totally my guilty pleasure author. That being said, I didn't feel this book as much. The romance was REALLY cheesy and the sex scenes were awkward to read. It was still a fun book, but probably not one I'd reread.

164. The Vespertine by Saundra Mitchell
Rating: 2/5
Comments: I didn't really like this book. First of all her writing seemed kind of pretentious, and she didn't explain the fantasy elements much. It was mostly about the main character's romance with another character, and the romance wasn't a well written one. You didn't get a feel for why they cared for each other so much, because the girl fell in love with him AS SOON AS SHE LOOKED INTO HIS EYES (and heard his voice in her head) and then there was a lot about them being in different social classes. It seems to be a thing in YA fiction now to have love at first sight and leave it at that without going deeper, which makes it hard for me as the reader to relate or really care.

165. Uncommon Criminals by Ally Carter
Rating: 3/5
Comments: What a quick and easy read! It was a fun and amusing book, and made me think of a combination of Alias and Ocean's Eleven. The main character is such a Sydney Bristow wannabe. Still something missing from the book. Maybe it's Carter's writing.

166. The Iron Queen by Julie Kagawa
Rating: 3/5
Comments: It was a fun read, but I liked the other books better. Grimalkin the cat continues to be my favorite!

167. The Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman **
Rating: 5/5
Comments: Another book from my childhood, and another book where I missed the religious aspects of it! It's a really fun book and Lyra's character is fabulous. I look forward to rereading the rest of the books in the series!

168. Wondrous Strange by Lesley Livingston
Rating: 2.5/5
Comments: This book didn't grab me. Probably won't be reading the next one.

169. Grave Peril by Jim Bitcher
Rating: 3/5
Comments: I'd been warned by a few people that this book wasn't that great, and it wasn't. Will still be reading because I enjoyed the first two and I heard it gets a lot better!

170. The Sherwood Ring by Elizabeth Marie Pop
Rating: 5/5
Comments: LOVED this book. It was so much fun, and really cute and creative.

171. I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak **
Rating: 4/5
Comments: Zusak is a terrific writer. He just has this beautiful and lyrical way of writing that really touches me, and while this book might seem really lame and cheesy if someone else had written the plot, somehow it just WORKS. My only issue is that the ending is a bit odd.

172. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares
Rating: 4/5
Comments: I think my favorite thing about this book was that while the girls did have some romance, it wasn't about the guys so much as it was about them and their friendship. The romances were more about how it affected THEM. You could definitely feel their love of each other through the pages, even though the four are very different.

173. Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Leviathan
Rating: 4/5
Comments: This book was a lot of fun.

174. Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan
Rating: 4/5

175. Matched by Allie Condie
Rating: 3/5
Comments: This book had a lot of issues. The world didn't make much sense and what did make sense was apparently taken from The Giver, the story wasn't that enthralling, and the romance made no sense. She was matched with her best friend who is a really great guy and just a moment of seeing another guy, one she barely knew and who was sort of an outcast of society, is apparently enough for her to question her entire world and want to be with him. I got the sense that she loved him more out of pity than actually loved him. But hey, none of the guys were creepy stalkerish guys so at least there's that.

176. How Not to Write a Novel by Howard Mittelmark
Comments: This book was hilarious with a lot of fun examples. I will admit to thinking of certain writers as I read this, which made it even better.

177. ABC Murders by Agatha Christie

178. The Mystery of the Blue Train by Agatha Christie

179. Hungry by Crystal Renn
Rating: 1/5
Comments: This was one of those books where I was somewhere and extremely bored, all the books I had were finished, and this was the only one around so I picked it up. I think the main problem with this book was that it wasn't edited well and she would tell multiple things at once which made it confusing. One second she'd be in 7th grade, then she'd be in 9th grade, then back to 7th. I read most of the book but didn't quite reach the end, and I won't bother hunting it down again.

180. The Subtle Knife by Phillip Pullman
Rating: 4/5
Comments: The first book is my favorite of the series. It set up a great character in an interesting world and had an interesting plot. I think the weirdest thing about this book is that suddenly, Lyra's not the main character anymore. Will is, and Lyra is more of a sidekick than anything else.

181. Amber Spyglass by Phillip Pullman
Rating: 4/5
Comments: Unrelated to the book, but one fun thing about reading this series is seeing how it has influenced other things. Right now I'm mostly thinking about how the beach scene in this book parallels the beach scene with the Doctor and Rose in Doctor Who.

182. How to Ruin a Summer Vacation
Rating: 2/5
Comments:

This book was a very easy read, and an interesting one because it takes place
in Israel. I have to admit that reading books that involve traveling is
a huge guilty pleasure of mine, so I was excited to pick up this book. I
ended up feeling disappointed by it.

My main problem was with the main character, Amy. She always went on
and on about how she wasn't a spoiled American bitch that everyone said
she was, but she seemed pretty spoiled and bitchy to me. I didn't like
her AT ALL which made it hard to sympathize and the book felt way too
short. I would appreciate more time spent on the culture and the other characters than on her breasts, which came up every few pages and had multiple jokes about them. Her breasts might as well have been another character.

183. Lady Macbeth's Daughter by Lisa Klein
Rating: 3/5

184. Heat Wave by "Richard Castle"
Rating: 2/5
Comments: There
were a lot of problems with this book, the main thing being that it
didn't FEEL like a book. Instead, it was like I was reading a TV show or
movie play out. The sentences were choppy, the romance was rushed, and
the constant change from referring to the main character as Nikki and as
Heat were distracting.

185. 13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson
Rating: 3/5
Comments: This book is a lot of fun but there are a few things about it that you have to be in the right mood to ignore. There really isn't much of a conflict or characterization or character development, and you have to be willing to allow the fact that, despite being told that her mom is practical and the complete opposite of her adventurous aunt, she is somehow willing to let her 17 year old travel around Europe for a few months with no parental supervision and not being allowed to use technology to communicate with home. But it is a quick and fun read and I love reading books that take place in Europe, especially if it involves travel.

186. Spell Bound by Kelley Armstrong
Rating: 4/5
Comments: looking forward to the next one!

187. Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta
Rating: 4/5
Comments: This was a really cute and fun book.

188. The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson
Rating: 3/5
Comments: This book was interesting, the idea of a modern day Ripper, but it wasn't AMAZING and the ending felt a bit off.

189. The Girl of Fire and Thorns
Rating: 2/5
Comments: This book was a bit too religious for me, but that wasn't the only problem. I also had an issue with characterization. The main character gets kidnapped but ends up joining her kidnapper's side (and goes on about one of the guy's good looks while doing so). She is also in the beginning fat and lazy, but works it off and gets into shape and then becomes amazing, and her husband ends up being cowardly and lame. It was an INTERESTING book and certainly kept me reading, but other than that there wasn't too much going for it.

190. Lily of the Nile by Stephanie Dray
Rating: 3/5
Comments: This one wasn't bad, although not my favorite about that time period.

191. The Queen's Pawn by Christy English
Rating: 3/5

192. Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters
Rating: 4/5
Comments: I don't get to read too many mysteries (although I enjoy them!) so this was nice. Add in the fact that Egypt has always interested me and the fact that the romance was decent, and you have an enjoyable read.

193. The Last Little Blue Envelope by Maureen Johnson
Rating: 3/5
Comments: I'm a huge sucker for travel books, and this one had more plot and character development than the first one, although the first one was a bit more fun. But I don't think Johnson's writing style quite does it for me.

194. If I Should Die Before I Wake by Han Nolen

195. Song of the Nile by Stephanie Dray
Rating: 1/5
Comments: This book was really awful, mostly because while I was reading it I had a sort of sinking feeling in my stomach and ended up skimming the rest. It had a rape, victim blaming, incest, lots of sleeping around, and more. And the way it was written just didn't work out for me at all.

196. Saving Juliet by Suzanne Selfors
Rating: 3/5
Comments: A fun book about a modern day actress who finds herself in the story of Romeo & Juliet. A bit too short, but cute.

197. Hamlet by William Shakespeare
Rating: 5/5
Comments: *sigh* I love this play. I had seen various versions of it but never read it, so it was nice to do that.

198. Princess of Glass by Jessica Day George
Rating: 4/5
Comments: I liked this one much better than the first, and the character of Poppy is a fun one. It's also a different and fun take on Cinderella.

199. The Tea Rose by Jennifer Donnelly
Rating: 3/5
Comments: The book certainly kept my interest, but it was way too dramatic and Fiona was such a perfect character. She's beautiful, strong, feisty, has great ideas that seem to be too good and work out too well, and everyone falls in love with her. She's likable enough, I guess, but I was just rolling my eyes at most of the book.

200. The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner
Rating: 4/5
Comments: I've heard that the next book is much better, but I enjoyed this one. I liked the main character and there was some nice mythology involved. Definitely reading the next one!

201. The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen
Rating: 3.5/5

202. Soulless by Gail Carriger
Rating: 2/5
Comments: You can read my review about it

203. In the Shadow of the Lamp by Susanne Dunlap
Rating: 3/5

204. American Heiress by Daisy Goodwin
