Merlin 3x05

OK, so I was spoiled about this episode and it's outcome, and I'm still mad about it (more about that later in this entry). BUT! There were a few positive things about it. So I'll list those
1. Arthur/Morgana. It's sad that I have to be grateful for the tiniest moments these days, but it was great. Everything from Arthur thinking about the present for her feast to being really worried about her when she was sick, and even beating that pole up a lot with his sword.

2. Visually stunning! Not to mention I liked how Merlin spent so much time trying to prevent the future that he was, in a sense, the one that kind of made it happen. Made me think very much of the book, I Am Morgan Le Fay.
...aaand that's about it. Now for the rant.

I'm not necessarily opposed to Arthur and Morgana being related. I shipped them when they were brother and sister in The Mists of Avalon, I shipped them when they were aunt and nephew in The Road to Avalon, etc. Nice try, writers, but that's not enough for me to go "EWWW INCEST NOW I SHIP ARTHUR/GWEN!" What bothers me is HOW they did it. They spent all of season 1 setting Morgana up as a potential love interest for Arthur. In fact, as I recall, Uther didn't even seem opposed to the idea of them getting together! Speaking of Uther, I'd always gotten more of a "I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU" vibe rather than a "I love you because you're my daughter vibe."

Another thing that bothers me is how Uther, who killed so many people (including children) for having magic and basically committing acts of genocide, is portrayed as a good guy with all of the "good and sympathetic" characters defending him. I get Arthur. Uther's his father and all he wants is his approval and love. Of course he's going to obey him and listen to him. But somehow the show manages to portray those who've been oppressed and targeted by Uther ~evil~ for trying to fight back. Right. Nice going there, show!

The problem with this show is that it's SO black and white, and I think it could have been interesting with some gray. Like, Morgana still being good, but being conflicted with wanting to stop Uther from killing others like her. Not just "I'M EVIL NOW AND UTHER MUST DIE AND IF ANYONE GETS IN MY WAY, I'LL KILL THEM TOO" It could have been quite interesting, seeing her inner battles and struggles and trying to make it so that the druids and Arthur can eventually have some sort of tentative peace. After all, she's in both worlds now.

I think I might be done with this show. I'm just so sick of the BS they pull and the retconning and everything. And how they feel that every ~serious~ episode must be followed with some "humorous" episode, which they aren't to me, really, because I'm not a fan of burping/farting/everyone running around acting like an idiot and ooc just for some cheap laughs. No thanks, show.

I'll still be around for the Arthur/Morgana fandom. But I'm not watching any more.
